【概略】
アメリカの小さい町に生まれたジャックとデビッドには幼馴染のメリーがいた。メリーはジャックを愛していた。ところが二人は都会から来たシルヴィアの恋敵となった。1917年アメリカが欧洲大戦に参加すると二人は飛行士に志願。訓練を終えた二人はフランス戦地へ出征し、大活躍。その後の戦闘でデビッドは敵地に不時着。デビッドは脱出しようと敵の飛行場に潜入した。敵機を盗んで飛翔、陣地へ帰ろうとしたのだ。デビッドを失くしたと思ったジャックは復讐に燃え、遭遇した敵機を追撃。しかし、これはデビッドが乗る飛行機であった……。
【感想】
大昔の無声外国映画なんて、見ることはないだろうと思っていた。しかし、配信サービスのおかげで見ることができた。この90年前の作品をほぼ遜色なく（白黒だけど）見ることができたとは、驚きである。また、この作品がゲイリー・クーパーの銀幕デビュー作だったという驚き、淀川長治さんの解説によると、このデビュー作でクーパーに注目したのは日本だそうな。判官贔屓な性質が、薄命な兵隊に心寄せるのだろうか。
さて、この作品、当時としては空中戦をこのように描いて見せるのは、まさしく、どうやって撮影したのだろうと思わずにはいられない画期的な映像であったのだろう。その空中シ
ーンは迫力において現代の作品には劣るけれど、空中映像としてなんら遜色はない。第一次世界大戦を地上でなく、空中から描いてみせたというところに無声映画当時としては驚きだったのだと思える。理不尽で無情な結末は戦争だからしかたないと片づけられてしまうようなあり様で、無念で無残だと思われる。それゆえ、戦争はしてはならないと、私には思える。そして、複線として描かれる恋物語。友情も描かれるが、どちらにしても思いがすぎる人がいるようだ。
やや長く、同じ音楽で延々と続けられる戦闘シーンは冗長に感じられるが、クライマックス、ラストとオチがあることで、この作品を作る意義が感じられる。
この「つばさ」が公開された1927年にリンドバーグが大西洋横断に成功しており、航空機熱が高かったと思える。

In 1917, when America entered the European War, the two volunteered as pilots. After completing their training, they were dispatched to the battlefields in France and were very successful. In a subsequent battle, David made an emergency landing in enemy territory. Trying to escape, David infiltrated an enemy airfield. He stole an enemy plane and attempted to fly back to their positions. Believing he had lost David, Jack was consumed by revenge and pursued an enemy plane he encountered. 【Impressions】
I never thought I would watch ancient silent foreign films. However, thanks to streaming services, I was able to watch them. It is surprising that I could watch this 90-year-old work almost without any loss (just in black and white). Also, it is amazing that this film was Gary Cooper’s screen debut. According to Nagaharu Yodogawa’s commentary, it was Japan that first took notice of Cooper in this debut film. Maybe the tendency to root for underdogs leads people to sympathize with the ill-fated soldier.
Now, as for this film, at the time, portraying air battles in this way must have been groundbreaking, making one wonder how they managed to shoot it. The aerial scenes may
not match modern works in terms of impact, but as aerial footage, they are by no means inferior.
I think what was astonishing at the time of silent films was that World War I was depicted not on the ground, but from the air. The unreasonable and ruthless ending seems inevitable because it is war, leaving a sense of regret and cruelty. Therefore, it makes me feel that war should never happen. And there is a love story depicted as a subplot. Friendship is also portrayed, but in either case, there seem to be people whose emotions are excessive. The somewhat long battle scenes, which continue endlessly with the same music, feel tedious, but with a climax, ending, and resolution, the significance of creating this work is felt. In 1927, when “Wings” was released, Lindbergh successfully crossed the Atlantic, so there was probably a high enthusiasm for aviation.

En 1917, lorsque les États-Unis participèrent à la guerre européenne, les deux se portèrent volontaires comme pilotes. Après leur entraînement, ils partirent sur le front en France et y firent des exploits remarquables. Lors d’un combat ultérieur, David s’écrasa dans le territoire ennemi. David tenta de s’échapper en infiltrant un aérodrome ennemi. Il vola un avion ennemi pour retourner dans leur camp. Pensant avoir perdu David, Jack, consumé par la vengeance, poursuivit un avion ennemi qu’il rencontra. Cependant, il s’agissait de l’avion piloté par David….
【Impressions】
Je pensais que je n’aurais jamais l’occasion de regarder un vieux film étranger muet. Cependant, grâce aux services de streaming, j’ai pu le voir. C’est incroyable de pouvoir regarder cette œuvre vieille de 90 ans presque sans altération (bien qu’en noir et blanc). De plus, il est surprenant d’apprendre que ce film était la première apparition à l’écran de Gary Cooper. Selon les commentaires de Nagaharu Yodogawa, c’est le Japon qui a remarqué Cooper grâce à ce premier film. Peut-être que notre nature de soutenir les causes perdues nous fait sympathiser avec les soldats à la destinée tragique.
En ce qui concerne ce film, pour l’époque, représenter un combat aérien de cette manière devait être une image révolutionnaire, qui pousse forcément à se demander comment cela a été filmé. Ces scènes aériennes sont moins impressionnantes que celles des films modernes, mais elles ne le cèdent en rien en tant qu’images aériennes.
Il me semble que c’était surprenant pour l’époque du cinéma muet que la Première Guerre
mondiale ait été représentée non pas depuis le sol, mais depuis les airs. La fin irrationnelle et impitoyable semble être simplement considérée comme inévitable à cause de la guerre, ce qui paraît à la fois injuste et cruel. C’est pourquoi, à mon avis, la guerre ne doit pas avoir lieu. De plus, une histoire d’amour est décrite en filigrane. L’amitié est également représentée, mais dans tous les cas, il semble y avoir des personnes dont les sentiments sont trop intenses. Les scènes de combat, un peu longues et prolongées sans fin avec la même musique, peuvent sembler redondantes, mais le fait qu’il y ait un climax, une fin et une chute fait sentir la valeur de cette œuvre. En 1927, année de la sortie de « Wings », Lindbergh a réussi à traverser l’Atlantique, ce qui montre que la passion pour l’aviation était élevée.
